Charleston

A walkable peninsula, barrier islands, and a food town that is no longer a secret.

Pastel historic houses and palmettos in Charleston, South Carolina

When to go

March–May and October–November. Summer is hot, wet, and popular. Hurricane season applies (June–November).

How to get there

CHS airport. A car helps for Sullivan’s Island, Folly, and the plantations; downtown you will park once and walk. I-95 and I-26 if you are driving the East Coast.

Neighborhood / area split

South of Broad / historic peninsula for first stays. Upper King for restaurants. Folly Beach or Sullivan’s Island if the trip is half sand. Do not confuse a peninsula hotel with an island week.

Budget vs splurge

Budget: walk the Battery, a beach day on Folly, casual Lowcountry plates. Splurge: a historic inn and one long dinner. Carriage tours are optional; the streets are the show.

Season notes

Afternoon thunderstorms in summer are routine. A named storm is not — have a cancel plan in peak hurricane months.
