Loop / River North for architecture boats and first nights. Logan Square / Pilsen / Hyde Park if you want a neighborhood, not a skydeck. Near North is convenient and priced like it.
Budget: a neighborhood hotel on the Blue or Red Line, a museum free day, Italian beef. Splurge: a river-view room and a reservation that is about the food, not the scene.
Wind off the lake changes a waterfront walk in an hour. Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot.
