Granite, spruce, and a park loop that still feels like a getaway from the megalopolis.
When to go
September–early October is the prize (fewer crowds than August, clearer than June fog). July–August is peak. Many island businesses slow after Columbus Day.
How to get there
Fly BGR or PWM and drive. A car is useful; the Island Explorer bus helps in season. From Boston it is a long but honest coastal drive.
Neighborhood / area split
Bar Harbor for walkable dinners and park access. Northeast Harbor / Southwest Harbor quieter. Schoodic if you want the park without the island crush. Cadillac at sunrise is a reservation-and-alarm problem, not a casual add-on in peak months.
Budget vs splurge
Budget: a mainland motel, park loop, packed lunch on granite. Splurge: an in-town inn and a lobster you did not eat in a parking lot — unless that is the point.
Season notes
Fog and a sudden cold rain are the coastal default. Ocean swimming is for the committed even in August.
