When to go
Late fall through April is the walking season. Summer is hot and festival-dense. Hurricane season is June–November; September–October still have beautiful days and a real storm risk.
How to get there
MSY is the airport. A car is optional in the Quarter and Marigny; useful for plantations or the wetlands. Amtrak’s City of New Orleans still rolls in from Chicago.
Neighborhood / area split
French Quarter if you want to walk out the door into it — noisy, historic, priced accordingly. Marigny / Bywater for music and a slightly slower night. Garden District / Uptown for porches and the streetcar. Do not treat Bourbon Street as the whole city.
Budget vs splurge
Budget: po-boys, neighborhood gigs with a one-drink minimum, streetcar day pass. Splurge: a small hotel in a Creole townhouse and one reservation at a place that still takes the food seriously.
