When to go
April–June (wildflowers, some fog) and September–October (clearest). Winter can close the highway. Summer fog is a feature, not a bug, on the water.
How to get there
Fly SFO or SJC and drive. Do not assume Highway 1 is fully open — check Caltrans the morning you roll. A compact car is enough; the road is the point.
Neighborhood / area split
Carmel / Monterey as a civilized north anchor. Big Sur proper for the overnight that makes it a trip, not a drive-by. Cambria / San Simeon as the south bookend. One night in the middle beats a same-day out-and-back from the Bay.
Budget vs splurge
Budget: camp or a motel in the bookends and day-drive the coast. Splurge: a Big Sur lodge with a canyon or ocean deck — inventory is small, prices tell the truth.
Season notes
Landslides close this road. Fog hides the view until noon. Neither is a reason to skip; both are reasons to have a Plan B inland (101).
