Great Smoky Mountains
The busiest U.S. national park, still worth it if you leave the main drag at dawn.
When to go
October for color (book early). April–May for waterfalls and fewer crowds than summer. Summer is family-peak. Winter is quiet on the Tennessee side, icy on the high roads.
How to get there
Fly TYS or AVL. A car is required. Cades Cove and Newfound Gap Road are the classic loop; parking fills. Check NPS road status in winter.
Neighborhood / area split
Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge is the carnival at the gate — convenient, not the park. Townsend is calmer. Cherokee, NC if you enter from the east. Sleep outside the loudest strip if you came for ridges.
Budget vs splurge
Budget: a Townsend motel, picnic breakfast, one long ridge walk. Splurge: a cabin with a view you actually sit on, not a themed mini-golf package.
Season notes
Fog is the name. Afternoon storms in summer. Leaf season traffic is the other weather.
