When to go
May–June and September for swimming without peak crowds. July–August is family-peak and priced like it. Hurricane season is June–November; a named storm is a cancel-policy problem, not a vibe.
How to get there
ORF is the airport. I-64 if you are driving. A car helps for First Landing, the oceanfront hotels, and the Virginia Aquarium. The boardwalk itself is feet and a bike. Amtrak to Norfolk plus a short hop is a real option from the Northeast.
Neighborhood / area split
Oceanfront / boardwalk for the classic stay — you came for the Atlantic. North End quieter sand. Town Center if you want restaurants without sleeping on Atlantic Avenue. First Landing State Park is the green lung, not an afterthought.
Budget vs splurge
Budget: an oceanfront block off-peak, the free boardwalk, a pier walk, a cooler. Splurge: a north-end room with an actual ocean window, not a parking-lot view sold as “resort.”
